The demand for alternative energy sources is growing steadily, so specific codes and test standards (e.g. UL 1741SA / IEEE 1547 / IEC 62116) have been established for grid-connected decentralized power configurations such as solar power and wind power equipment. Equipment manufacturers are required to conduct tests in accordance with the specifications in order to prove that the equipment complies with the standards.

Main functions and applications

The 61800 Series Recycled Grid Analog Power Supplies are constant voltage outputs that can be applied to the testing of general power products (e.g., home appliances, switching power supplies). 61800 Series will output power to the load, and at the same time protect the 61800 with the overcurrent protection setting (OCP). 61800 Series will activate the energy recovery mechanism if the test object is a product that will feed energy back into the grid (e.g., solar power inverters, bi-directional chargers and dischargers), and other distributed power generation equipment. Distributed power generation equipment, if the output power is detected as "negative (-)" power while outputting voltage, the 61800 will activate the energy recovery mechanism to convert the reverse current/negative power energy generated by the inverter to the AC power grid. Unlike general AC power supplies that cannot withstand the rechargeable energy of the object to be measured, the 61800 series can be applied to the full four quadrants of positive and negative voltages/currents in the positive and negative directions, and has the energy recovery function, which is sufficient to become a power grid analog power supply.

In addition to decentralized power testing applications, the 61800 Series Recycled Grid Simulators can also be qualified for Smart Grid and Electric Vehicle related testing applications, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Energy Storage System (ESS) testing. 61800 Series Recycled Grid Simulators are not only limited to the RD phase of product development, but can also be used in the QA and production phases of product development. The 61800 series is not limited to the RD stage of product development, but can also be used in the quality verification and production stages.

The 61800 series utilizes full digital control technology to provide maximum power at a maximum phase voltage of 300V and a frequency range of 30Hz to 100Hz. In addition to pure AC voltage output, AC+DC output mode is also available to extend the application to test DC bias components. In addition, it can provide two times the peak continuous maximum output of the root-mean-square current, which is suitable for inrush current testing of the input of the object to be tested.

In addition to outputting smooth voltage and frequency, the 61800 Series offers powerful editing modes (STEP/PULSE/LIST) to simulate a wide range of power grid anomalies and disturbances to meet test requirements. The STEP and PULSE modes provide for single-step or continuous voltage variations. This function is often used to simulate power disturbances such as cyclic dips, instantaneous high voltage, and voltage dips. Users can use the LIST mode to edit more complex test waveforms, including 100 sequences with programmable start and end states, and waveform components that can include AC and DC, to create almost any desired signal waveform. Using these modes, the 61800 series can simulate a wide variety of voltage dips, interruptions and variations, and at the same time be used for regulatory immunity testing in accordance with IEC 61000-4-11 (pre-certification testing) and -4-13/ -4-14/ -4-28.

Users can apply the SYNTHESIS function to set the 40th order harmonic components to form a periodic distorted waveform using 50Hz or 60Hz as the fundamental frequency. In addition, the INTERHAR function is provided, which is used to set another non-harmonic variable frequency component in addition to the fundamental frequency, and can be scanned from 0.01Hz to 2400Hz, which can help to find the resonance point of the input of the object to be measured or the vulnerability of the anti-jamming point.

The 61800 series provides a front panel LCD display and a keyboard, allowing users to easily operate the instrument manually, or through the standard interface GPIB, RS-232, USB, and Ethernet interfaces for digital control of computers, Chroma also provides the instrument's control driver, which can be used with Labview software for control system program integration.

Microgrid Testing

The 61800 Series Recovery Grid Analog Power Supplies provide the harmonic distortion voltage and frequency conditions required for microgrid testing to match the characteristics of the analog grid. Most importantly, the 61800's energy recovery feature allows the power generated by the object under test to be fed back into the AC grid at a high efficiency to meet microgrid testing requirements. 61800 series products include isolation of the input to the AC grid, so there is no need for additional isolation on the object under test side of the analog microgrid.

Regulatory testing of grid-connected decentralized power generation equipment

The 61800 Series Recycled Grid Simulation Power Supplies are compliant with regulatory tests (e.g., IEEE 1547 / IEC 61000-3-15 / IEC 62116) for grid-connected decentralized power generation equipment, with the following main test items:

  • Grid Voltage Abnormality Test
  • Frequency Abnormality Test for Power Grids
  • Anti-islanding Test
  • Low Voltage Ride Through Test
  • Immunity Test Voltage Variation Immunity Test (IEC 61000-4-11/-4-34)
  • Limit Test Limit Test for Current Harmonics and Flicker (IEC 61000-3-2/-3-3)
energy conservation

The energy recovery function of the 61800 series provides an effective solution to save energy. For example, the energy generated by the solar inverter under test can be efficiently fed back to the power grid through the 61800, thus eliminating the need for additional power-consuming resistors. (see figure below)

Low Voltage Ride Through Test

When abnormal grid voltage conditions occur (e.g. voltage dips), the grid-connected PV Inverter must maintain a normal output for a period of time, which depends on the degree of voltage dips (e.g., according to the BDEW standard, when the voltage dips to 15% of the normal voltage, the grid-connected PV Inverter must maintain a normal output for 150ms), and PV inverters that comply with the LVRT function must not only maintain a period of normal output, but also generate the corresponding invalid power according to the degree of voltage dips. In addition to maintaining a normal output for a certain period of time, a grid-connected inverter must also generate a corresponding amount of ineffective power according to the degree of voltage dips.

The 61800 series recycled grid simulation power supply is fully compliant with LVRT test requirements. Users can use the LIST mode in the waveform editing function to establish LVRT (Low Voltage Ride-Through) test conditions, and the 61800 series' voltage output change response speed is fully compliant with the LVRT test requirements. Meanwhile, in order to understand the impact of harmonic voltage on the TRD (Total Rated Distortion) of the PV inverter output current, the harmonic synthesis function of the 61800 series can simulate different harmonic grid voltages to meet this test requirement. In addition, the output frequency resolution of 61800 series is 0.01Hz, which meets BDEW's requirement of frequency resolution.

Anti-islanding Test

The 61800 Series Recycled Grid Simulation Power Supplies can be paired with the 8000 Test System and the A800067 RLC Load to meet IEEE 1547/ IEC 62116 requirements for anti-islanding effect testing.

Chroma_Page_61830_10

The 61800 series has new optional features such as the B618000: Energy Recovery AC Load feature and the B618002: 120kVA 800V.LN XHV high-voltage function, further expanding the 61800 series of products for test applications.

The energy recovery AC load function consists of various modes such as CC rectifier mode, CP rectifier mode, CR mode, CC phase lead/lag mode and CP phase lead/lag mode.

Rectifier mode is mainly used to simulate non-linear rectified load testing, similar to the Chroma 63800 series AC loads operating characteristics with voltages and currents operating in the first and third quadrant regions. Rectifier mode supports CC and CP functions, where current, power and CF are parameterized.

The phase angle setting range is from 90 degrees to -90 degrees to match the corresponding voltage and current conditions under inductive and capacitive loads simulated in phase ahead/lagging mode. The current waveform of 61800's energy recovery AC load function is sinusoidal in phase ahead/lagging mode (the current, PF, and phase angle are parameterized), and 61800 will become a current source when the phase angle is set from 90.1 degrees to 180 degrees (-90 degrees to -180 degrees). When the phase angle is set at 90.1 degrees to 180 degrees (-90 degrees to 180 degrees), the 61800 becomes a current source. 61800's energy recovery AC load function is mainly used for EVSE charging stations, hybrid inverters, PCS, UPS, and micro-grid related test applications.
